Summer is the worst time to buy a flight. Most people buy anyway.
Here's the pattern I've watched for years. Demand peaks from June through mid-August, airlines hold fares high, and everyone books at the top. Then school starts, leisure travel drops off a cliff, and prices follow it down.
That cliff is about to hit.
Labor Day is the switch
The drop isn't gradual. It's a flip.
Once families stop traveling in early September, airlines are stuck with seats to fill through September, October, and early November. Empty seats are worthless, so they discount to move them. On the domestic routes we watch from Florida and Texas, that usually means fares fall 20% to 40% off their summer peak.
Same flight. Same airline. A few weeks of patience.
What "fall shoulder season" actually means
Shoulder season is the gap between peak summer and the holiday rush. For us that's roughly September 8 through November 18.
The weather is still good, the crowds are gone, and the fares are the lowest they'll be until the dead of winter. Then Thanksgiving and Christmas demand slams prices back up. So this window is the deal, not a warm-up to a better one later.
Miss it and you're paying holiday prices.
Why this matters for our 8 airports
Leisure-heavy airports drop the hardest. That's most of ours.
Orlando (MCO), Tampa (TPA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and Miami (MIA) are packed with vacation traffic all summer, so they have the most air to let out in the fall. Jacksonville (JAX) follows the same curve. In Texas, Austin (AUS) and Houston (IAH) soften after summer, and Dallas (DFW) opens up cheap connections to just about everywhere.
If you fly out of any of these, the next ten weeks are your window.
The booking window that works
Here's the truth: booking too early costs you, and booking too late costs you more.
For domestic fall trips, the sweet spot is roughly 3 to 8 weeks before you fly. That's late August through late September for most September and October travel. For international, push it out to 6 to 10 weeks and watch for the post-summer transatlantic drop.
Book inside 14 days and you pay the walk-up penalty. Don't.
How to catch it, step by step
1. Pick 2 or 3 destinations you'd actually go to this fall, not a dream list 2. Search each from your home airport using a flexible-date view across September to November 3. Note the price today so you have a baseline to measure the drop against 4. Set a fare alert on each route so you're not refreshing tabs all week 5. When a fare lands 20% or more below your baseline, ship it. Don't wait for a "better" one 6. Book directly with the airline once you've found the fare, so changes are easier later
The people who win at this set the alert and forget it. The people who lose keep waiting for a price that already came and went.
One more thing on flexibility
Tuesday and Wednesday departures still run cheapest in the fall.
If you can fly midweek and avoid the Friday-to-Sunday rush, you'll usually stack another $40 to $90 in savings on top of the seasonal drop. Shifting your trip by a single day is often the difference between a good fare and a great one. That's free money for a little schedule flexibility.

The bottom line
The post-summer drop is one of the most reliable patterns in domestic airfare. It's happening right now, and it closes when holiday demand takes over in mid-November.
Set your baselines this week. Turn on alerts. Book in the 3-to-8-week window and fly in the fall while everyone else overpays for the same seats in December.
