Getting from Gatwick to Central London
Don't take the Gatwick Express ($25+). Take the Southern Rail train instead, same route, same platforms, $12 and takes 10 extra minutes. Or the Thameslink to central London for even less. Oyster card or contactless payment works on everything.
Free Stuff That's Actually Amazing
London's secret weapon is free museums. And I'm not talking about sad, empty rooms. These are world-class:
- British Museum (literally priceless artifacts, free)
- Tate Modern (incredible contemporary art, free)
- Natural History Museum (the building alone is worth it, free)
- National Gallery (Monets, Van Goghs, free)
Walk along the South Bank from the Tate to Tower Bridge. It's one of the best free walks in any city I've visited. Borough Market is nearby for lunch, yes it's touristy but the food stalls are genuinely good. Budget $8-12 for a solid meal.
Where to Stay Cheap
Hostels in Zone 1-2 run $30-50/night for a private room (not a dorm). We like the Generator London or Safestay Kensington. For hotels, check the Premier Inn chain, they're the UK's budget hotel king and rooms start around $70 in decent locations.
The Pub Situation
Pubs are not cheap. A pint is $7-8 in central London. But here's the move: Wetherspoons. It's a chain pub with locations everywhere, pints for $4-5, and food for $8-10. Not fancy, but solid. Every Londoner knows it.

- Food: $90 (mix of markets, pubs, and Tesco meal deals)
