Things to Do in Lisbon

Lisbon is having a moment and honestly it deserves it. Gorgeous tile-covered buildings, incredible seafood, a nightlife scene that goes until dawn, and it's still significantly cheaper than Paris or London. The hills will destroy your calves though.

Take Tram 28 early morning before the crowds

The famous yellow tram is a tourist trap after 10am (packed, pickpockets). At 8am it's half empty and you can actually enjoy the route through Alfama and Graça neighborhoods.

Eat a pastel de nata from Manteigaria

Better than the famous Pastéis de Belém (controversial opinion, but true). The Chiado location bakes them fresh constantly and you eat them warm. Get two.

Sunset drinks at a rooftop bar in Bairro Alto

Park Bar, Topo Chiado, or SEEN — any of them will give you a Tagus River sunset view with a €6 glass of Portuguese wine. Start around 7pm in summer.

Day trip to Sintra

30 minutes by train. Fairy-tale palaces in the clouds. Pena Palace is the famous one but the Moorish Castle walls have better views and fewer people. Go on a weekday.

Walk the Alfama neighborhood without a map

Intentionally get lost in the oldest neighborhood. Follow the sound of Fado music, peek into tiled courtyards, find a miradouro (viewpoint) with nobody else there.

What to Avoid in Lisbon

The Belém area on weekends

The famous monastery and pastry shop have hour-long lines on weekends. Tuesday morning is the sweet spot — Jerónimos Monastery with no queue.

Tuk-tuk tours

Overpriced, corny, and they clog the narrow streets locals need to use. Walk or take the public trams — the city is compact enough that you don't need a tour vehicle.

August heat + hills combination

Lisbon in August regularly hits 100°F and the city is built on seven hills. That combination is brutal. If you go in summer, bring good shoes and embrace the afternoon rest culture.

Canned sardines as souvenirs from tourist shops

The fancy sardine shops on Rua Augusta mark up prices 300%. Buy the same quality sardines at a regular supermarket (Continente or Pingo Doce) for €2-3 per tin.
