Barcelona, Spain Travel Guide

Barcelona hits different than most European cities. It's got beaches AND mountains, Gaudí architecture that looks like it was designed on mushrooms, and a food scene that'll ruin you for tapas anywhere else.

Things to Do

Walk through the Gothic Quarter early morning

Before 9am the narrow medieval streets are practically empty. Grab a cortado from Satan's Coffee Corner on Carrer de l'Arc de Sant Ramon del Call and wander without a plan.

Skip the line at Sagrada Familia with a 9am ticket

Book the earliest morning slot online weeks ahead. The light through the stained glass on the east side is at its best in the morning. Budget 90 minutes minimum.

Eat at La Boqueria market — but go to the back stalls

The front stalls are tourist traps charging €8 for a fruit cup. Walk all the way to the back left corner where locals actually eat. Pinotxo Bar has been there forever for a reason.

Take the funicular up to Bunkers del Carmel

Better views than Park Güell, completely free, and way less crowded. Bring a bottle of cava for sunset — half the neighborhood does this on warm evenings.

Day trip to Montserrat monastery

About an hour by train plus cable car. The mountain itself is otherworldly — jagged sandstone formations that look like a sci-fi movie set. Go on a weekday if possible.

What to Avoid

Las Ramblas restaurants

Almost every restaurant directly on Las Ramblas is overpriced and mediocre. Walk one block in either direction and the quality-to-price ratio improves dramatically.

Pickpockets on the metro

Barcelona has a well-known pickpocket problem, especially on L3 (green line) and around Plaça Catalunya. Keep your phone in your front pocket and don't put bags down.

August — the entire city empties out

Locals flee to the coast, half the good restaurants close for vacation, and it's 95°F with no breeze. If you can, visit literally any other month.

Expensive beach clubs

Barceloneta beach is free and perfectly fine. The €40-cover beach clubs sell the same experience with a markup and a velvet rope attitude.
