Find your bearings

Asheville is a mountain town that punches way above its weight. With more breweries per capita than almost anywhere in the US, a food scene that rivals cities ten times its size, and the Blue Ridge Mountains in every direction, it's become one of America's best small-city escapes. Artsy, outdoorsy, and unapologetically weird.

Neighborhoods

DowntownWalkable blocks packed with indie bookstores, rooftop bars, buskers, and restaurants in art deco buildings
River Arts District (RAD)Former industrial warehouses now housing 200+ artist studios, breweries, and the French Broad River greenway
West AshevilleThe locals' hangout: dive bars, vinyl shops, farm-to-table brunch, and Haywood Road's walkable strip
South SlopeBrewery row with a dozen craft breweries within walking distance. Wicked Weed, Burial, Green Man all here

Best time to visit

October for peak fall colors on the Blue Ridge Parkway. April through May for wildflowers and mild weather. Summer is busy but gorgeous. Winter is quiet and cozy with fireplace bars.

Getting around

Downtown is completely walkable. Everything's within 15 minutes on foot
You need a car for the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls, and hiking trailheads outside of town
Free parking at River Arts District and on Lexington Ave side streets. Metered downtown but cheap
The ART bus is free and loops downtown, connecting to North Asheville and the River Arts District

Insider intel + tourist traps

Tips

  • Brewery taprooms close early here (most by 9 or 10pm). Start your crawl by 3pm if you want to hit multiple spots
  • Make dinner reservations, especially weekends. Asheville is small and the best spots fill up days in advance
  • The Blue Ridge Parkway has no gas stations, food, or services. Fill up and pack snacks before heading out

We did a brewery every afternoon and a different hike every morning. Asheville is the only place where you can be outdoorsy and eat/drink this well in the same trip.

Skip

  • Biltmore Estate admission ($65+): gorgeous but pricey. The free Blue Ridge Parkway views are equally stunning without the ticket
  • Pack Square tourist shops: overpriced 'mountain craft' souvenirs made in China. Buy from actual artists in the River Arts District instead
  • Grove Arcade restaurants: pretty building but the food inside is mostly mediocre and overpriced for what you get
