Find your bearings
Austin is live music, breakfast tacos, and outdoor everything wrapped into one sweaty, friendly city. South Congress is the postcard version with boutiques and food trucks, East Austin is where the creative energy lives now, and Rainey Street turns old bungalows into bars. The heat is real (May through September is brutal), but Barton Springs and Lady Bird Lake keep everyone sane. The food scene punches way above its weight, and the vibe is genuinely welcoming.

Tips
- ✓The heat is not a joke. June through September regularly hits 100+ degrees. Hydrate constantly, plan outdoor activities for early morning, and embrace the AC culture between stops
- ✓Austin is a late city. Most bars serve until 2am, live music peaks at 11pm, and nobody eats dinner before 8pm. Adjust your schedule and nap if needed
- ✓Skip 6th Street (Dirty Sixth) on weekends unless you want frat party energy. Rainey Street and East 6th have better bars with actual character and less chaos
“We got Franklin brisket (yes, waited 3 hours but brought lawn chairs and made friends), swam at Barton Springs to cool off, then caught an unreal blues set on Red River for free. Austin delivered on every front.”
Skip
- ✗Dirty Sixth Street on weekends: overcrowded, overpriced, and full of bachelor parties. The bars are generic and loud. Rainey Street or East 6th give you the real Austin bar experience
- ✗Salt Lick BBQ (Driftwood): scenic drive but the barbecue doesn't compare to Franklin, La Barbecue, or Terry Black's. Locals rarely go unless they have out of town guests who insist
