Dubai is two cities in one: the gleaming towers and artificial islands that make the headlines, and the old creek-side trading port that most visitors never see. The contrast is the appeal. You can eat a $300 gold-leaf steak for dinner and then haggle for saffron in a 100-year-old souk the next morning. It's excessive, surprising, and far more culturally rich than its reputation suggests.

Downtown & DIFC — Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain, and the financial district's hidden gallery and restaurant scene in Gate Village

Best time to visit
November through March for pleasant 70-85°F weather and outdoor dining season. Summer (June through September) hits 115°F and everything moves indoors. Ramadan dates vary — respect local customs during this period.
Getting around
The Dubai Metro is clean, cheap ($1 to $2 per ride), and connects the airport to Downtown, Marina, and Mall of the Emirates
Uber and Careem work perfectly. Dubai Marina to Downtown is about $8 to $12
Abra water taxis across Dubai Creek cost 25 cents and are the most charming way to see Old Dubai
RTA buses are excellent and air-conditioned. The nol card works across metro, buses, trams, and water buses

Insider intel + tourist traps
Tips
- ✓Dubai is not as expensive as you think. Street food is $3 to $8, metro rides are $1, and budget hotels exist in Deira for $40/night. The excess is optional
- ✓Dress modestly in malls, Old Dubai, and public areas. Beachwear is for the beach only. Shoulders and knees covered is the safe rule
- ✓Alcohol is only served in licensed venues (hotels, select restaurants). You can't buy it in stores without a license. Plan accordingly
- ✓The weekend is Friday through Saturday. Many restaurants and attractions are busiest Thursday night and Friday afternoon
