Find your bearings

Dubrovnik's Old Town is stunning but tiny — you can walk end to end in 15 minutes. The trick is knowing when to be inside the walls (early morning, late evening) and when to escape to the beaches, islands, and hillside neighborhoods where locals actually hang out. Cruise ship days flood the Stradun, so plan around them.

Neighborhoods

Old Town (inside the walls)Limestone streets, baroque churches, and the Stradun main boulevard. Beautiful but heaving with tourists midday
LapadResidential peninsula 3km west with its own beaches, seaside promenade, and affordable restaurants locals prefer
GružThe harbor neighborhood with the green market, fish market, and ferry port to the islands. Real Dubrovnik life
Babin KukQuiet area beyond Lapad with pine-shaded beaches like Copacabana and Cava, great for families and swimmers

Best time to visit

May through June and September through October for warm seas, fewer cruise ships, and lower prices. July and August are packed and 95°F+. April is lovely but too cold for swimming.

Getting around

Dubrovnik is walkable but hilly. Wear proper shoes on the polished limestone streets
Bus 6 connects Lapad/Gruž to Old Town every 15 minutes for about $2
Airport shuttle bus runs to Old Town and Lapad for $8. Taxis charge $35+
Ferries to Lokrum Island depart from Old Port every 30 minutes in summer for $10 round trip

Insider intel + tourist traps

Tips

  • Check cruise ship schedules online. On days with 3+ ships, Old Town gets 8,000+ extra visitors. Plan your walls walk on low-ship days
  • The Dubrovnik Card (1/3/7 day) includes walls, museums, and bus rides. Worth it if you're doing the walls walk ($35 alone)
  • Swim shoes are essential. Beaches are rocky and sea urchins lurk near rocks at Banje and Sveti Jakov

We kayaked past the walls at golden hour and had Šunj Beach on Lopud nearly to ourselves in late September. Peak Dubrovnik without peak crowds.

Skip

  • Stradun restaurants with picture menus: textbook tourist traps charging $30 for mediocre pasta. Walk one street parallel for better food at half the price
  • Paying €25+ for 'Game of Thrones tours' when you can download a free map and find every location yourself. The city is tiny
  • Buža Bar's drink prices: stunning location but $15 cocktails that are mostly ice. Go for one drink and the view, not a session
