Find your bearings

Fiji is 333 islands of which about 100 are inhabited. Most visitors stick to the Mamanuca or Yasawa island chains (quick boat ride from the main island), but the Coral Coast and northern islands offer equally stunning reefs with fewer tourists. The Fijian people are genuinely among the warmest you'll meet anywhere.

Neighborhoods

Nadi & DenarauGateway town and resort island. Denarau has beach resorts; Nadi has the market, temple, and airport
Mamanuca IslandsThe postcard islands 30-90 min by boat from Denarau. Crystal water, coral reefs, and resort options from budget to ultra-luxury
Yasawa IslandsRemote volcanic chain further north. Backpacker bures, village stays, and the Blue Lagoon caves
Coral CoastThe southern coast of the main island with reefs, waterfalls, and cultural villages less touristy

Best time to visit

May through October for dry season with warm days and cool evenings. July-August is peak season. November through April is wet season (cheaper, humid, occasional cyclones). Water is warm year-round.

Getting around

Awesome Adventures Fiji runs the Yasawa Flyer catamaran connecting 15+ islands ($60-90 hop-on pass)
Local buses on the main island cost $1-5 and are an adventure in themselves
Seaplanes connect remote islands and offer incredible aerial reef views ($150-300)

Tips

  • Always bring a sevusevu (kava bundle, $5 at Nadi market) when visiting a village. Present it to the chief first
  • Sundays are sacred in Fiji. Many villages and some islands restrict activities. Ask before hiking or swimming
  • Reef shoes are essential coral is sharp and sea urchins lurk in shallow water
  • Fiji time is real. Nothing starts on schedule. Embrace the pace and you'll enjoy yourself more

We skipped the fancy resorts and stayed in a village bure for $30/night. Ate lovo feasts with the family, snorkeled pristine reefs, and made friends for life.

Skip

  • Denarau Island 'cultural shows' sanitized resort entertainment when real village visits are more meaningful
  • Resort snorkel trips ($80) to reefs you can swim to for free from shore with your own $10 mask
  • Airport taxis quoting $40 to Nadi town when it's a 10-minute drive worth $8-10
