Neighborhoods
District 1 (Downtown) — The tourist center: Notre-Dame Cathedral, Bến Thành Market, rooftop bars, and the backpacker strip of Bi Viện
District 3 — Quieter, tree-lined streets with local cafés, pagodas, and the best bánh m in the city
District 4 — Working-class neighborhood across the canal with incredible seafood restaurants and zero tourists
Thảo Điền (District 2) — Expat hub with brunch spots, craft cocktail bars, and leafy riverside villas
Chợ Lớn (District 5) — Saigon's Chinatown: ornate temples, herbal medicine shops, and Binh Tay Market's wholesale chaos
Best time to visit
December through April for dry season. May through November is rainy but showers are short afternoon bursts. Avoid Tết (Lunar New Year) unless you want to see the city empty out.
Getting around
Grab is the ride-hailing app here. A motorbike ride across the city costs $1 to $3, car rides $3 to $7
Renting a motorbike is $7/day but traffic is intense. Take Grab bikes until you get comfortable with the flow
The airport bus (Route 109) goes to District 1 for $1. Way better than the $10 to $15 taxi
Walking is fine within districts but crossing streets requires faith. Walk slowly and steadily, bikes flow around you

- ✓Carry small bills (10k to 50k VND). Street vendors rarely have change for 500k notes. $1 USD ≈ 25,000 VND
- ✓Cross the street by walking slowly and steadily. Don't stop, don't run, don't make sudden moves. Motorbikes will go around you
