Las Vegas has two faces: the Strip's billion-dollar fantasyland and the real city where locals live and eat. The best food is off-strip on Spring Mountain Road (Chinatown), the best bar scene is downtown on Fremont East, and the best nature is 20 minutes away at Red Rock Canyon. Come for the spectacle, stay for the surprises.
Neighborhoods
The Strip (Las Vegas Blvd) — 4.2 miles of mega-resorts, shows, and over-the-top architecture. Fun to walk once but not where locals hang out
Fremont East (Downtown) — The original Vegas with vintage neon, craft cocktail bars, and the Arts District's galleries and breweries. Locals' nightlife hub
Spring Mountain Road (Chinatown) — 5 miles of incredible Asian food: Korean BBQ, dim sum, ramen, pho, and hot pot. Open late, priced right, zero tourists
Arts District (18b) — Converted warehouses with galleries, murals, coffee shops, and First Friday art walks. Vegas's creative heartbeat
Summerlin — Master-planned community on the west side with Red Rock Canyon access, local breweries, and the hiking trailheads locals use daily
Best time to visit
March through May and October through November for comfortable outdoor weather. Summer (June to September) regularly exceeds 110°F and the pool becomes your only activity. December and January are mild with occasional chilly nights.
Getting around
The Deuce bus runs the entire Strip and downtown for $6 per day. Much cheaper than rideshares in Strip traffic
Uber and Lyft pickup points at casinos are marked but often confusing. Pin drop your exact location for drivers
Rent a car if you want to explore Red Rock, Hoover Dam, or Valley of Fire. Parking at most off-strip spots is free
Walking the Strip takes longer than you think. One end to the other is 90 minutes on foot, mostly through casino detours

- ✓The best food value in Vegas is the off-strip Asian corridor on Spring Mountain Road. Better food than the Strip at a third of the price
- ✓Resort fees add $30 to $60 per night on top of your room rate. Check the total before booking. Some downtown hotels skip the fee entirely
- ✓The monorail runs behind the east side of the Strip and costs $5 per ride. Useful for getting between the Convention Center and MGM Grand quickly
