Find your bearings

The Maldives isn't just honeymoon resorts (though those are incredible). Since 2009, local islands have opened guesthouses that let you experience the same turquoise water and marine life at a fraction of resort prices. You can snorkel with whale sharks, mantas, and turtles from $30 guesthouses. The water really is that blue.

Neighborhoods

MalThe tiny capital island dense, colorful, and worth a half-day for the fish market, mosques, and local food
North Mal Atoll (resorts)The closest resort atoll to the airport. Quick speedboat transfers to overwater villas and house reefs
Maafushi (local island)The most popular budget island, 30 min by ferry from Mal. Guesthouses, bikini beach, and excursions
South Ari AtollWhale shark territory. Both luxury resorts and local islands here offer guaranteed whale shark snorkeling

Best time to visit

November through April for dry northeast monsoon (best visibility, calm seas). January-March is peak and priciest. May-October is wetter but cheaper, with better manta ray encounters on the west side.

Getting around

Speedboat transfers to resorts are $100-300 round-trip (often included in booking)
Public ferries connect Mal to local islands for $2-5 slow but scenic and local
Seaplanes to remote atolls cost $300-500 RT but the aerial views of atolls are unforgettable
On local islands, everything is walkable. Most islands are under 1km long

Insider intel + tourist traps

Tips

  • Local islands are Muslim. Bikinis are only allowed on designated 'bikini beaches' respect the culture
  • Alcohol is only available at resorts, not local islands. Plan accordingly or bring duty-free from the airport
  • Book whale shark trips from South Ari Atoll guesthouses ($60-80) rather than resort excursions ($200+)
  • The cheapest month is May (shoulder season) water is still warm, prices drop 30-40%, and manta season begins

We did 4 nights at a Maafushi guesthouse ($50/night) then 3 nights at a resort. Best of both worlds local culture and luxury for the price of resort-only.

Skip

  • Resort-only trips that never show you local island life you miss the culture entirely
  • Airport hotel hawkers pushing overpriced transfers when public ferry is $2
  • All-inclusive drink packages at resorts ($100/day) when most people only have 2-3 drinks by the pool
