Montego Bay — MoBay to locals — is Jamaica's tourism capital, but the real flavor lives outside the resort gates. The Hip Strip has bars and shops, but head into the neighborhoods for jerk pits, rum bars, and dancehall sessions. The beaches inside the city are gorgeous, and the countryside is a short drive away.

Tips
- ✓Jamaican dollars (JMD) get you better prices at local spots. $1 USD = roughly 155 JMD. Change money at Cambios, not hotels
- ✓Don't eat at your resort. Walk 10 minutes in any direction and the food is better and 80% cheaper
- ✓Wi-Fi is spotty outside resorts. Buy a Digicel SIM at the airport for $15 USD with data that works island-wide
- ✓'Soon come' means anywhere from 5 minutes to never. Embrace island time or you'll stress yourself out
“Skipped the resort buffet every night and ate jerk chicken at Scotchies and Pork Pit instead. Spent $50 total on food for three days and ate like royalty.”
Skip
- ✗Margaritaville on the Hip Strip: $15 burgers and watered-down drinks when Pork Pit is 200 yards away
- ✗Airport 'official' taxi stand: fixed $35 rate when a route taxi or pre-booked transfer is $15 to $20
- ✗Rose Hall Great House tour: $25 for a 20-minute ghost story. See it from outside for free and spend the money on a raft trip instead
