Montego Bay — MoBay to locals — is Jamaica's tourism capital, but the real flavor lives outside the resort gates. The Hip Strip has bars and shops, but head into the neighborhoods for jerk pits, rum bars, and dancehall sessions. The beaches inside the city are gorgeous, and the countryside is a short drive away.

Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) — The main tourist drag with bars, souvenir shops, and Dead End Beach at the north tip
Downtown MoBay — The real city: Sam Sharpe Square, the craft market, and local food joints where Jamaicans eat
Rose Hall — East of town with the famous haunted great house, plus Half Moon beach and upscale resorts
Ironshore — Residential area north of town with local restaurants, less tourist markup, and Pier One for sunsets
Negril (day trip) — 1.5 hours west for Seven Mile Beach and Rick's Cafe cliff jumping at sunset
Best time to visit
December through April for dry season and comfortable heat. November and May are shoulder season with lower prices. June through October is hurricane season but deals are incredible.
Getting around
Route taxis run set paths around MoBay for $1 to $2 USD. Flag them down on the main roads
Agree on taxi price before getting in. Airport to Hip Strip should be $20 to $25 USD
Rent a car only if you're comfortable driving on the left on winding mountain roads
JUTA tour buses run from the airport and cruise port but are pricey. Route taxis are the local move

- ✓'Soon come' means anywhere from 5 minutes to never. Embrace island time or you'll stress yourself out
