Last month one of our deal spotters found MCO to Cancun on Spirit for $67 round trip. Sixty-seven dollars. I booked it within 30 seconds and figured I'd write up what a budget weekend actually looks like down there. Spoiler: it's incredibly doable.
Getting There Cheap
The fare game from Florida to Cancun is legitimately wild right now. Spirit, Frontier, and even JetBlue are running sub-$100 round trips from MCO, FLL, and TPA multiple times per week. We flag these in the deals dashboard the moment they drop. The key is having your passport ready and being able to book fast.
Day 1: Hotel Zone on the Cheap
Skip the all-inclusives for a 48-hour trip. I stayed at a small hotel on the lagoon side of the Hotel Zone for $45/night. Not glamorous, but clean and you're still walking distance to the beach. Lunch was $6 tacos at a spot the hotel staff recommended (always ask locals, not Google). Spent the afternoon on Playa Delfines, it's a public beach with zero entrance fees and it's honestly prettier than the resort beaches.
Dinner was ceviche and two beers at a place near the bus station for $14. Total Day 1 spend: about $80.
Day 2: Downtown Cancun
Here's the thing most tourists miss: downtown Cancun is where the real food is. Take the R1 bus from the Hotel Zone ($0.80 each way, seriously) and eat at Parque de las Palapas. Street tacos are $1-2 each and I had some of the best al pastor of my life.
Walked around Mercado 28 for souvenirs, haggle everything, starting at 50% of asking price. Grabbed a hammock for my balcony back home for $18.
The Budget Breakdown
- Flights: $67 round trip (Spirit, MCO-CUN)
- Hotel: $90 (2 nights, lagoon side)
- Food & drinks: $65 (eating well, not fancy)
- Transport: $12 (buses + one Uber)
- Activities: $40 (snorkeling trip at Punta Nizuc)
- Misc: $25 (souvenirs, tips)
Total: $299 for a weekend in Cancun
That's less than most people spend on a Saturday night in Miami. The key is skipping the tourist traps and being willing to eat where locals eat.
