Lisbon has been on everyone's "next trip" list for like five years now and honestly? It deserves the hype. But what makes it special for us deal hunters is that it's genuinely affordable, both to get there AND once you land. We're talking about a European capital where a nice dinner with wine costs \$18 and a boutique hotel runs \$70/night. That's not a hostel. That's a real hotel with actual charm.
Getting There Cheap
TAP Air Portugal flies direct from MIA and EWR to Lisbon and they run sales constantly. We've seen MIA to LIS for \$320 round trip and EWR for \$280. Norse Atlantic occasionally drops even lower. \$247 was our record find last year. From Texas, you're looking at connections but DFW to LIS through Lisbon on TAP or through London runs \$380-\$450 in shoulder season.

Day 1: Alfama and the Waterfront
Start in Alfama, it's the oldest neighborhood with narrow winding streets, tile-covered buildings, and viewpoints (miradouros) that'll make your jaw drop. Miradouro da Graça is free and has the best panoramic view of the city. Grab a pastel de nata from any bakery (\$1.20 each, they're all good) and just wander.
For lunch, hit a "tasca", these are tiny local restaurants with daily specials. Full meal with a drink for \$8-12. I'm not exaggerating. The fish is always fresh and the portions are generous.
Take Tram 28 through the historic center (\$3.50 with a Viva Viagem card). Yes it's touristy. Yes it's still worth it once.
Day 2: Belem and Time Out Market
Belem has the famous Jeronimos Monastery (free on Sundays before 2pm), the Tower of Belem, and Pasteis de Belem, the original custard tart shop since 1837. There's usually a line but it moves fast and they're \$1.30 each.
For dinner, Time Out Market in Cais do Sodre is a food hall with stalls from Lisbon's best chefs. It's not the cheapest option (\$12-18 per dish) but the quality is outstanding and you can try multiple things. Or skip it and eat at a neighborhood tasca for half the price, both are valid choices.
