What Makes Medellin Special
The neighborhoods are the thing. El Poblado is where most tourists stay, it's walkable, safe, full of restaurants and nightlife. Laureles is where the locals hang and it's my personal favorite: cheaper, more authentic more chill. Envigado (technically its own city, but connected by metro) has incredible food markets and a small-town Colombian vibe.
The metro system is clean, safe, and costs \$0.70 per ride. The cable cars (metrocable) take you up into the mountainside comunas with panoramic views. \$0.70 for that too. Compare that to a \$35 Uber ride in Miami to go five miles.

Is It Safe?
I know this comes up. Short answer: yes, with normal big-city awareness. Medellin in 2026 is not what you saw on Netflix. El Poblado, Laureles, and Envigado are genuinely safe for tourists. Use Uber instead of street taxis, don't flash expensive jewelry, and stay aware of your surroundings, same advice as any major city.
