Everyone defaults to the same five Caribbean destinations. Cancun, Punta Cana, Nassau, Jamaica, San Juan. And look, those are fine, we send deals for all of them. But if you're willing to venture slightly off the beaten path, there are Caribbean islands with better beaches, fewer crowds, and flights that are often cheaper because demand is lower. Win-win-win.
Dominica (Not Dominican Republic)
First things first: Dominica and Dominican Republic are completely different places. Dominica is a tiny volcanic island between Guadeloupe and Martinique that's basically one giant rainforest with hot springs, waterfalls, and diving. They call it the "Nature Isle" and it's earned.
Flights from MIA connect through San Juan or St. Maarten for \$280-\$380 round trip. Not the cheapest, but the island is so undeveloped and uncrowded that it feels like you discovered it yourself. Zero cruise ship ports, almost no resorts, just jungle lodges and local guesthouses for $50-80/night.
Grenada
The "Spice Isle" is criminally underrated. Beautiful beaches, a charming capital (St. George's), world-class snorkeling, and an underwater sculpture park. JetBlue flies direct from JFK and connections from Florida run \$300-\$400 round trip.
What makes Grenada special: it's got the Caribbean beauty without the Caribbean tourist infrastructure. No massive resorts dominating the coastline. The beaches at Grand Anse and Magazine Beach are stunning and you might have them mostly to yourself midweek.
St. Kitts and Nevis
Two islands, one country, zero stress. St. Kitts has direct flights from MIA on American (\$250-\$350 RT when sales hit) and Nevis is a short ferry ride away. Nevis specifically is one of the least touristy Caribbean islands with maybe 11,000 residents total. The Four Seasons is there but so are \$60/night guesthouses with beach access.
The rum is excellent. The beach bars close when they feel like it. Nobody's in a rush. It's the Caribbean the way it used to be.
Tobago (Not Trinidad)
Trinidad's little sibling island is a bird-watcher and diver paradise. It's got some of the best reef diving in the Southern Caribbean and the beaches are postcard-perfect. Caribbean Airlines flies from MIA with a stop in Port of Spain, total journey about 5 hours, fares $280-$380.
The thing about Tobago is that it's still primarily a local vacation spot for Trinidadians. You won't find all-inclusives or tourist trap restaurants. You'll find \$5 fish meals at beach shacks and empty coves accessible by hiking trails.
