We get it. Cancun is easy. Punta Cana is familiar. But if you're flying out of Florida and only hitting the big-name Caribbean spots, you're missing some genuinely incredible islands with cheaper flights, fewer crowds, and beaches that'll make your Instagram followers think you hired a photographer.
Curacao
This is my personal favorite that nobody talks about. JetBlue flies FLL to Curacao direct for $180-$250 round trip regularly. The island has Dutch colonial architecture in Willemstad (UNESCO World Heritage), incredible snorkeling at Playa Kenepa, and food that mixes Caribbean and European flavors. Hotels are 30-40% cheaper than comparable spots in Aruba next door.
Bonaire
If you dive or snorkel, Bonaire is paradise. The entire coastline is a marine park and you can shore-dive everywhere. United flies from IAH and there are connections from FLL. Fares hover around $280-$350 round trip. The island is tiny and quiet, no cruise ships, no party scene. Just crystal clear water and some of the best reef systems in the Western Hemisphere.
Roatan, Honduras
Hear me out. Roatan has some of the cheapest diving in the Caribbean (PADI certification for $300, fun dives for $35 each) and the beaches are stunning. Direct flights from MIA on United or connections through Houston run $200-$320 round trip. The west end of the island has chill beach bars and seafood restaurants where dinner costs $8-12.
Providenciales (Turks & Caicos)
Okay, Provo isn't exactly unknown. But the fares from Florida are way cheaper than people think. We've seen MIA to PLS for $180 round trip on JetBlue and American runs similar deals. Grace Bay is consistently rated the best beach in the world and while the island isn't cheap once you land, the flight savings mean your total trip budget is reasonable.
Grand Cayman on the Cheap
Most people assume Grand Cayman is only for the wealthy. And sure, Seven Mile Beach resorts are pricey. But Cayman Airways runs sales from TPA and MIA that drop to $220 round trip, and if you stay in an Airbnb on the east end, you get empty beaches and spend half what the resort crowd does. The snorkeling at Smith Cove is free and world-class.
