Central America on Points: Our Favorite Redemptions

Central America is criminally underrated for points redemptions. The flights are short (2-4 hours from Florida), the cash prices aren't insanely high to begin with, but the points pricing is so good that you'd be crazy not to use miles. Here are our team's favorite award bookings right now.

Costa Rica: The Easy Win

MIA or FLL to San Jose (SJO) on United for 10,000 miles one-way in economy. Cash price usually runs $250-$350 round trip, so you're getting about 1.5 cents per point value. Not earth-shattering, but when you can book a round trip for 20,000 miles with no fuel surcharges? That's a free vacation for one credit card signup bonus.

Avianca LifeMiles is even better here: 8,000 miles one-way from MIA. Transfer from Amex, Citi, or Capital One.

Guatemala: The Hidden Gem

Here's one most people miss. United flies MIA to Guatemala City for 10,000 miles one-way, same as Costa Rica. But Guatemala is significantly cheaper once you land. Antigua (the colonial city) is a $10 shuttle from the airport and accommodation runs $25-45/night for beautiful boutique hotels.

The real move: transfer Chase points to United at 1:1 and book 2-3 months out for best availability.

Panama: Business Class Steal

Copa Airlines flies MIA to Panama City multiple times daily and here's the wild part: business class awards through Avianca LifeMiles are only 20,000 miles one-way. That's a lie-flat seat (on longer routes) for the same miles most programs charge for economy. Copa's business class is solid: good food, lounge access at PTY, and the flight is only 3 hours.

Belize: Southwest's Sweet Spot

Southwest flies Houston (IAH) to Belize City and the Rapid Rewards redemption is usually 8,000-12,000 points one-way. If you have the Companion Pass (and you should, we wrote about that), your travel buddy flies free. Two people to Belize for 8,000 points total. Come on.

The Strategy

For Central America, the winning approach is: 1. Earn Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards 2. Transfer to United (Chase) or Avianca LifeMiles (Amex) 3. Book 2-3 months out when availability is best 4. Fly shoulder season (May-June, November) for both cheaper flights and fewer tourists

We track award availability for these routes and alert Premium Plus members when sweet spots open up. Check our pricing to see which plan includes points deal alerts.
