Both are easy 3-4 hour flights from Florida, both have incredible nature and culture, and both get cheap flight deals regularly. But they're very different trips and one of them is significantly cheaper once you land. Let's break it down.
Flights: Basically a Tie
Costa Rica (SJO or LIR): \$180-\$280 round trip from MIA/FLL on Spirit, JetBlue, or United. Liberia (LIR) is better for beach access, San Jose (SJO) for adventure/volcano stuff.
Colombia (BOG, MDE, CTG): \$140-\$240 round trip from MIA on Spirit, Avianca, or JetBlue. Bogota and Medellin are city trips, Cartagena is the beach option.
Edge: Colombia by \$20-40 on average. Spirit's Colombia routes are reliably cheaper than their Costa Rica ones.
On-The-Ground Costs: Colombia Wins Big
This is where it gets interesting. Costa Rica has gotten expensive over the past decade. It's still cheaper than the US but it's no longer the budget paradise it once was. Colombia, particularly outside Cartagena's tourist center, is genuinely cheap.

The difference adds up fast. A week in Costa Rica might run \$800-1,200 in non-flight costs. A week in Colombia? \$400-700 for comparable quality.
The Experience: Different Vibes
Costa Rica is nature-forward. Volcanos, zip-lining, wildlife, cloud forests, Pacific and Caribbean beaches. It's more spread out and you'll likely rent a car or take shuttles between areas. The infrastructure is more tourist-friendly with English widely spoken.
Colombia is culture-forward. Cities with incredible food scenes, vibrant nightlife, street art, music, coffee farms, and yes, also beaches in Cartagena and on the Caribbean coast. It's more urban-focused and the metro/Uber systems make getting around cheap and easy.
Safety Comparison
Both countries are safe for tourists with basic awareness. Costa Rica has a slight edge in perception but honestly the tourist areas of Colombia (Poblado in Medellin, Walled City in Cartagena, Chapinero in Bogota) feel very safe. I've spent 20+ days in Colombia across multiple trips and never had an issue.

If you want nature, adventure, and don't mind spending a bit more: Costa Rica. If you want culture, food, nightlife, and maximum value: Colombia.
