Everyone flies into Lisbon. I get it, it's the capital, it has more direct flights, and it's been all over Instagram for years. But here's my hot take: Porto is the better destination for most travelers AND it's often cheaper to reach. You get the same gorgeous tile buildings, the same incredible food, better wine (fight me), and about 60% fewer tourists clogging up the viewpoints.
The Flight Math
TAP Air Portugal flies direct from EWR to Porto (OPO) and the fares are consistently \$20-50 cheaper than Lisbon routes. We've seen EWR to OPO for \$260 round trip when Lisbon was \$320. From MIA there's no direct but connections through Lisbon add only 90 minutes and often price lower because Porto is less demand-heavy.
Ryanair and easyJet also fly cheap connections from Lisbon to Porto (\$15-25 one-way) if you want to do both cities. The train is $25-35 and takes 2.5 hours, honestly one of the prettiest rail journeys in Europe.
Why Porto Wins
The port wine cellars alone are worth the trip. You cross the Dom Luis I bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and there are dozens of cellars offering tastings for \$5-15. Some of these are centuries old with barrel rooms that smell incredible. Lisbon has wine bars, sure, but Porto has an entire neighborhood dedicated to wine aging. That's a different level.
The food is heartier too. Francesinha (Porto's signature sandwich, basically a meat tower covered in cheese and spicy sauce) costs $8-10 and will fuel you for an entire day of walking. Bacalhau (salt cod) is everywhere and prepared dozens of ways.
What Porto Has That Lisbon Doesn't
- The Douro Valley is 90 minutes away (wine country, river cruises, gorgeous)
- Fewer crowds at basically every attraction
- Livraria Lello (the "Harry Potter bookshop", yes its touristy but stunning)
- Better beaches nearby (Matosinhos is a 20-min metro ride)
- A grittier, more authentic Portuguese vibe
Budget Breakdown: 3 Days in Porto
- Flights: \$260-\$380 round trip
- Hotels: \$150 (3 nights, boutique hotel in Ribeira district)
- Food: \$60 (eating extremely well)
- Wine tastings: \$30 (3-4 cellar visits)
- Transport: \$12 (metro and walking)
- Total: ~\$520 for a European wine & food trip
